Charles Chapman Grafton papers, 1848-1894.

These private papers of a leading High Churchman concern his ecclesiastical career before he became bishop. Most are letters to William Rollinson Whittingham. They include Grafton's decision to leave law for the Church, 1854; his studies under Whittingham, examination, and ordination, 1855; and work in Western Run Parish, Baltimore County, 1856, and in Ascension Parish, Carroll County, 1857-1858. He declines a church in Washington, D.C., because it is fashionable and he prefers to minister to the poor. He writes of his missionary work in Baltimore City and service at the Church Home and Infirmary, 1861-1864. A number of Grafton's letters from England describe travels and occupations there, 1865-1871. He reports on conditions in the Church of England, the Cowley Fathers (the Society of St. John the Evangelist), the Clewer Sisterhood, religious affairs at Oxford, his work in London at the Cholera Hospital, and his attitude toward the Roman Catholic Church. After Grafton's return to America, letters discuss Bishop John Williams's disapproval of Grafton's work in Connecticut and attempts to introduce the Cowley Fathers there, 1872. Later letters concern High Church matters and Eucharistic doctrine while Grafton was rector of the Church of the Advent, Boston, Mass., 1872-1875. There is a printed copy of one sermon, 1864, preached at the funeral of the Reverend William E. Wyatt.
